SPECIAL TOPIC: ANGELS IN THE BIBLE

  1. Introduction
    1. The beings of the spiritual realm are never clearly discussed as to origin or purpose, except they were created by God and that they serve His purposes.

    2. Their descriptions are influenced by ANE mythology and the depictions of their art work.

    3. Surprisingly, they are often composite creatures (i.e. human, animal), which seems to go against Leviticus' "do not mix" rules.

    4. Humans are uniquely created by God to live in the physical realm. Our vocabulary and sense of chronological time is rooted in this reality. Angels, demons, and other spiritual beings are able to enter the physcial realm, but not remain there permanently.

    5. There seem to be ranks or types of spiritual beings related to their function. However, that function is never delineated in Scripture.

  2. Old Testament
    1. The term itself
      1. The Hebrew malach (BDB 521). Here are some examples from Genesis.
        1. a messenger ‒ Gen. 32:3
        2. an angel ‒ Gen. 19:1,15; 28:12; 32:1
        3. a physical manifestation of YHWH ‒ Gen. 16:7,9,10,11; 21:17; 22:11,15; 31:11; 48;16
Special Topic: The Angel of the Lord
      2. The Greek is angelos. Both Greek and Hebrew can mean "messenger" or "angel."
      3. They are a special creation of the Creator God (by the agency of Jesus. cf. Col. 1:16-17) to serve both God and humanity (cf. Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:6, 7,14). They can exist and manifest in both the spiritual realm and the physical realm. Apparently, they are multi-dimensional.
      4. One of the best brief discussions of rabbinical thought related to the angelic world is Alfred Edersheim (a converted rabbi), The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, vol. 2, appendix XIII, pp. 749-863 and XVI, pp. 770-776.

    2. The heavenly council ‒ It is possible the "Us" passages, such as Gen. 1:26; 3:22; 11:7, refer to a "heavenly council of angelic beings"; also note Ps. 82:1; 89:5,7 (see Special Topic: Heavenly Council of Angelic Beings
This spiritual realm has recently been highlighted by Michael Heiser, in his book, The Unseen Realm: Discovering the Supernatural World of the Bible. As a footnote, I must admit that I do not agree with all his theology or exegesis, particularly that related to Ps. 82, but I am very grateful for his bringing the discussion of this issue to the forefront.

        3. Raguel
        4. Michael
        5. Saraqael
        6. Gabriel
        7. Remiel

I Enoch, along with Jubilees and all interbiblical Jewish apocalyptic writings, were viewed as non-inspired, non-canonical by both the synagogue and the early church because they either
‒ added to the revelation of Jesus and the Apostles
           ‒ contradicted clear NT teachings

We must not use them as a true source of reality. They were well known by first century Jews and Christians, but rejected by both.

    5. Much of the theological problems with discussing the spiritual realm is the Bible's reluctance to discuss this area in detail or systematic ways. Humans made in YHWH's image and likeness are to trust Him, worship Him, and not be drawn away into discussions about things they cannot understand or affect! Believers know all we need to know (i.e. Col. 2:18; see Special Topic: False Teachers)

    6. Several books have recently become available that deal with this theological area
